Stuart Withycombe
With over 30 years’ experience, Stuart is a leading authority in bridge engineering design and assessment. He is a specialist in the design and construction of major bridges, many of which are sea and estuary crossings. He is renowned for his experience in the design and checking of cable-stayed bridges
Stuart's early career included working on the two major cable-stayed crossings in the UK at Dartford and over the River Severn Estuary. Recently he was responsible for leading a three-way joint venture charged with preparing the tender design for one of the contracting consortia bidding for the UK’s new £1 billion Forth Replacement Crossing.
His international experience covers Europe, the Far East, Middle East and Africa, both leading designs and providing expert advice and guidance.
Stuart has a successful track record in design competitions. Design wins include the prestigious international competition for Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong. In Holland he was project director for the winning team responsible for Prins Claus Bridge, a 150m cable-stayed crossing that was also shortlisted in the British Construction Industry Awards for best International Project.
He has been appointed to provide expert opinion in dispute resolution, authored a number of conference papers, delivered visiting lectures for undergraduates and sat on the editorial panel for the ICE Bridge Engineering Proceedings.
