Halcrow Yolles’s Accrington Rail Station project in Lancashire

Halcrow Yolles’s Accrington Rail Station project in Lancashire

Accrington Rail Station project, Lancashire, UK

The construction of a new and innovative eco rail station was carried out, and completed in August 2010, as part of Lancashire County Councils and Northern Rails commitment to continually improve the facilities to their customers. The new station building was built on the brown field plot of land adjacent to the existing station. The building provides a new ticket booking facility for Northern Rail and a Lancashire County Council run community learning centre.

Lancashire County Councils aspiration was to raise the awareness of low carbon design and sustainable methods of construction within the community. This aspiration led to the inclusion of a community learning centre located within the station building. The learning centre is to be used primarily to educate local school children in sustainable and eco design issues that are particularly relevant in today's society.

Halcrow Yolles provided a variety of building engineering services for this project including building services, structural and civil engineering and acoustic consultancy. As a requirement of the european funding for the project, Halcrow Yolles also provided a site-based observational role on behalf of the client to help ensure quality of the structural and early civils works.

2010 / 11 - Best Built Project Five Years On category, London Planning Awards

London DLR City Airport extension

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) London City Airport extension

The London Planning Awards are run jointly by the Mayor, London First, the Royal Town Planning Institute and London Councils. The ceremony was hosted by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson at City Hall on Thursday 20 January 2011.

When the extension opened in 2005 it provided the first dedicated rail link to Britain’s fastest growing airport. Since then the number of customers using the route has more than tripled and it has brought significant regeneration benefits to the communities it serves. The extension is just one chapter in the ongoing story of DLR growth. In 2009 the Woolwich Arsenal extension carried its first customers, and later this year the new Stratford International – Canning Town link will open, playing a key role in supporting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Halcrow, working for AMEC, acted as lead designer for the City Airport Extension, responsible for the design of all civil, structural, architectural and M&E works including rail systems. Weston Williamson was Halcrow’s architectural sub-consultant. Halcrow also provided support throughout the construction phase and during testing, commissioning and handover.
