At a cost of £60,000 the Halcrow Foundation has organised the construction of 29 houses in Galle, Sri Lanka, for people made homeless in the tsunami of 2004.

The foundation has directly financed 17 houses and has teamed up with the Erach and Roshan Sadri Foundation (ERSF) to provide funding for a further 12 homes. Another five houses – to be funded by the ERSF – is under consideration.

Once built, the houses are given to local families who don’t have the resources to finance a new home and have been unable to obtain assistance from the government or from another charity or non-governmental organisation.

Project sponsor Baghi Baghirathan has worked closely with Fr Bede Silva, a priest in Galle, to plan, manage and monitor the scheme.
