We learnt to be closer to the children. These children are different from other children, and they have become very close to us, because of the methods we now use.

With the full support of the Romanian authorities, the UK charity F.R.O.D.O. is implementing an ‘institutional transformation’ programme, called CARIS, to deliver dramatic improvements to the lives of disabled children in the country’s state orphanages – much of which was previously spent restrained in their beds.

Developed and implemented by F.R.O.D.O, CARIS introduces stimulation and sensory exercises to help children in care reach their full potential. In 2010 a £30,000 Halcrow Foundation grant funded the pilot stage of the structured training programme, with a further £12,000 recently approved to continue the next phase. This latest grant will cover the salary costs of the local programme manager.
