This $560 million (CDN) redevelopment of the Winnipeg International Airport (WIA) includes the design and construction of a new contemporary terminal building and connecting parkade, as well as the associated airside and groundside infrastructure.

The new 51,000m² air passenger terminal building will achieve improved operational efficiency and a high level of passenger service. It will accommodate domestic, international and trans-border traffic to the U.S. The building will also include a major public art component.

A key feature of the terminal is the double-height baggage claim hall with a unique skylight system which creates a ‘constellation’ effect. The new terminal will include long spans, large floor-to-floor heights, and an abundance of glazing to introduce natural light into all public areas and create a sense of openness and connection to the landscape.

A new four-level parking structure, with a capacity for 1,600 cars, and expanded surface parking is also part of the redevelopment. The long span precast concrete parking structure was specifically designed to permit rapid construction throughout the harsh winter months. It also features a cladding system to create aesthetic appeal and integration with the adjacent terminal building.

Halcrow Yolles is leading and managing the structural design team effort. As the structural designer of the new terminal building and parkade structures, the firm is responsible for all concept design and design development. Halcrow Yolles is also completing the majority of the construction documents for the new terminal building.

Local structural consultant, Crosier Kilgour & Partners, is the engineer of record, and is responsible for completing the construction documents, including those for the parkade, and for the final coordination of the new terminal building. Crosier Kilgour is also providing all contract administration services for the new terminal and parkade structures, while Halcrow Yolles retains all structural team project management functions throughout the duration of the project
