Halcrow has been working on sanitation projects in Peru since the early 1980s .
Peru has seen impressive economic growth in the last decade which has led to significant investment in infrastructure projects, including wastewater treatment.
Currently the domestic wastewater from the northern sector of Lima, Peru's capital city, is being conducted into the Taboada sector where the sewage is directly discharged through an open channel, without any pre-treatment, into the Callao Bay.
To put an end to this direct dumping of wastewater Halcrow was asked to carry out the design of a preliminary wastewater treatment works and sea outfall. The study involved consideration of alternative locations for the sea outfall based on the coastline characteristics and location of the existing treatment works.
Halcrow recommended the collection of all wastewater flows in the Taboada area to eliminate all untreated discharges into the sea and Rimac River. These flows should then be redirected to a single discharge point in the Callao Bay via the wastewater treatment works through twin 2400mm HDPE outfalls.
