Halcrow was commissioned to undertake inspections relating to various station infrastructure areas

Rail Corporation New South Wales (RailCorp) has been responsible for numerous Fire and Life Safety audits of Sydney metropolitan stations in recent years.

Subsequent audits have led to a performance-based fire engineering assessment format (fire and life safety audit checklist) based on the relevant standards, legislation and regulations. The audit data have been used to inform investment decisions relating to the enhancement of fire and life safety in the various stations.

As part of this ongoing process, Halcrow was commissioned to undertake inspections relating to various station infrastructure (or ‘Back-of-House’) areas on RailCorp’s City Underground Network and ESR Lines that had not been included in previous inspection programmes; these areas included plant rooms, storage spaces and suspended ceiling voids and the following stations:

  • Bondi Junction
  • Martin Place
  • Central  Redfern
  • Circular Quay
  • St. James
  • Domain
  • Town Hall
  • Edgecliff
  • Wynyard
  • Kings Cross

Halcrow’s report addressed the issues of compliance with the relevant Codes and Standards and highlighted the areas of non-compliance. Initial cost estimates were also given for the various remedial works deemed necessary in order to rectify existing non-compliances.
