As a result of low-cost airline Air Arabia’s rampant growth, Sharjah Airport has seen a steep increase in passenger numbers. While plans for a new terminal building and further expansion are in the pipeline, client Sharjah Airport Authority sought Halcrow’s help to boost capacity in the short term without requiring significant capital investment.
Drawing on significant experience gained in Europe’s major airports, we developed a series of operational approaches to make better use of the existing infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience. Using simulation modelling, we assessed passenger flows from both arriving and departing traffic. After identifying key constraints, we proposed immediate measures to cost-effectively increase capacity. Halcrow demonstrated the viability of potential solutions through simulation, allowing the client to make decisions prior to any capital outlay.
Along with modelling and simulation, we also provided expertise in airport planning, traffic analysis, operations consulting and civil infrastructure design.
