Role: Full structural engineering services

Halcrow Yolles provided full structural engineering services for the two-storey, 20,000–square foot Rotary/Flames House, Alberta’s first-ever exclusively paediatric palliative care and respite centre. The facility sits next to the Alberta Children’s Hospital, and will provide a haven for families whose children face progressive or life-threatening illnesses.

GEC Architecture designed the cutting-edge facility to look like a home rather than a clinical medical institution to ensure that children and their families feel as comfortable as possible during their stay. The centre also offers multiple outlets for fun, such as a playground, barbecue area, recreation room and sunroom.

Other key features of the House include a therapeutic activity room, a library, a sensory room and 11 bedrooms, some of which can accommodate entire family units.
