Keeping the UK’s road network running safely, whatever the weather, is crucial. The Highways Agency relies on its fleet of over 400 winter service vehicles to maintain driving conditions on the country’s arterial routes.
Since 2005 to date, Halcrow have managed the procurement of the new state-of-the-art vehicles to replace the Highways Agency’s previous ageing winter fleet. As the existing vehicles were up to 18 years old, increasing amounts of maintenance, cost and resource were required to keep them operational.
A seamless transition across 12 different geographical areas was critical to avoid disrupting operational capability – one of the project’s main requirements. Halcrow’s specialist winter team guided the entire process, from initial business case appraisal and contract management through to liaising with suppliers and auditing.
The efficient new fleet brings a host of benefits, both for the client and road users. Along with higher levels of operational service and road safety, maintenance costs have been drastically reduced, as have the amount of fuel and de-icing material used. Emissions produced by the new vehicles are markedly lower, while safety has been improved for operatives.
Halcrow’s specialist skills and experience ensured this multifaceted project was delivered to a challenging timeframe while maintaining operational functionality.
