In order to understand the condition of its marine assets across the USA, BP needed a full structural inspection of all the underwater structures. Halcrow’s expertise includes engineering divers, who were able to evaluate the structural condition of all the assets and develop dock inspection programme standards for BP to use in future at all its marine terminals.
The purpose of the inspection and engineering work was to identify structural and non-structural deficiencies in the terminal marine structures, perform mooring analyses and determine safe working loads for the mooring points, and perform facility audits to evaluate compliance with BP’s shipping marine assurance ship/shore interface minimum standards.
Halcrow performed inspections at 12 different BP facilities throughout the USA, including Brooklyn in New York, Tampa and Jacksonville in Florida, Chicago and Seattle. The work was carried out by five-person teams, made up of a professional engineer-diver/team leader, a dive supervisor, an engineer diver, and two technical divers, as well as a stand-by diver. We also produced supporting documents and drawings, and made recommendations for rehabilitation, conceptual repair design, and associated cost estimates for work at all the facilities.
As a result of the inspection programme various structural concerns were identified and addressed at the marine terminals to restore safe operational conditions.
