Halcrow has helped thousands of holiday makers get even more enjoyment from the sun-kissed Bahamas after it undertook significant improvements to the Castaway Cay facility on Great Abaco Island.
As lead consultant for client American Bridge, Halcrow’s Tampa-based team, spearheaded a multi-pronged programme of activity that included retro-fitting the existing pier to accommodate larger cruise ships - due to enter service in 2011.
Other key elements included:
- Rebuilding an existing rock breakwater structure adjacent to the pier
- Expanding a boat marina
- Providing piles and netting to contain stingrays
- A floating water slide feature and breakwater.
- Widening existing tram ways and building concrete pavements around new buildings
- New building structures including dining pavilion, message huts, beach/snorkel equipment rental, cast housing, retail, kitchen, beach cabana structures and restroom facilities
- Utility improvements - sanitary sewer and lift stations, potable water, electrical and diesel distribution, 10,000 gallon diesel storage tank, 40,000 gallon potable water storage tank, diesel generators, and 25,000 gallon per day RO fresh water units
- Replacement of an existing pedestrian/tram bridge decking over channel to bay
Halcrow’s project director, Brian Tanberg, said: “We helped our client meet all of its key requirements, such as improving the overall guest experience and wider customer service, while simultaneously reducing congestion and shortening journey and disembarkation times.”
