With passenger numbers surging to 12.5 million following a three-year period of sustained growth, Athens International Airport (AIA) sought Halcrow’s expertise to review its 1998 master plan.

As part of a joint venture with Dutch consultant NACO, Halcrow produced a revised, long-term vision of the airport’s infrastructure development. Set against a backdrop of booming passenger growth, the client required comprehensive analysis of previous master plan assumptions.

Halcrow’s study focused on the existing terminal expansion strategy and the designated development zones surrounding the airport site. A 20-year demand forecast – stretching to 2025 – underpinned the project, which also included airport systems modelling and infrastructure capacity assessments.

We produced an investment plan outlining the funding required to accommodate projected growth over the next 50 years, as set out in our phased development plan. This work will help the client effectively and cost-effectively manage traffic growth over the next half century, providing options for future development and expansion.
