On Friday 1st December 2008 hundreds gathered to celebrate the official opening of Ashton Market Hall. Four years on from the devastating fire which left the hall in ruins, the building described as the ‘heart of Ashton’ was finally brought back to life.

The new market hall accommodation included the main market hall stall areas, support storage, toilet and rest facilities, administration and community facilities.

Halcrow Yolles was responsible for the design of the building services engineering for the market hall including external public realm lighting scheme. Systems included heating, ventilation, (including smoke ventilation), domestic services, gas, sprinklers, foul water, BMS, Low Voltage Installation, standby generation, lighting and emergency lighting, small power and ancillary services, fire alarm and detection, telephone and data, lightning protection, earthing and bonding and security.

The main market hall employs passive ventilation and high level gas fired radiant heaters, following the value engineering of the under-floor heating installation. Remaining areas benefit from LPHW heating fed from high efficiency condensing boilers.

The building, as a market hall, has been designed with the facility for multi tenancy occupation.
