Halcrow was commissioned to carry out planning, design and site supervision for a second runway at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

The Supervision Committee for the Expansion of the Abu Dhabi International Airport was formed in 2004 to facilitate the development of Abu Dhabi International Airport. In March 2005 SCADIA appointed Halcrow to provide planning, design and supervision services for a second runway and associated infrastructure.

The new CAT III, Code F runway is intended to serve the A380 aircraft being introduced into the Etihad Airways fleet.

To facilitate the rapid development and growth of Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways, Halcrow was appointed by SCADIA to provide planning, design and construction supervision services for the provision of a new runway, taxiways and associated infrastructure at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

To meet the fast-track programme Halcrow designed and supervised an advance bulk earthworks contract to cut and fill 5 million cubic metres of material to generally achieve formation levels for the permanent airfield works prior to award of the main contract.

Project planning commenced in March 2005, earthworks commenced in August 2005 and the runway was operational in October 2008 an overall period of only 43 months for planning design and construction.
