July 2011
Halcrow was part of the successful team behind the Sandford access bridge refurbishment project – winner of the environmental engineering prize at the ICE Thames Valley engineering excellence awards 2011.
These annual awards showcase the best civil engineering projects in the Thames Valley region. Sixteen local projects made the shortlist for 2011, which was presented in five categories. Judging criteria included creativity and innovation, sustainability and environmental sensitivity and benefits to the client and wider public.
The project team – consisting of the Environment Agency, Halcrow and Jacksons Civil Engineering – topped the environmental category, with an award presented by ICE president Peter Hansford.
Halcrow’s Billy Ahluwalia said: “This is an outstanding achievement by Halcrow and the project team - it is a great reflection of the hard work done by all.”
Howard Larkin, chair of the judging panel, said: “The judges were impressed by the sustainable design solution of Sandford Bridge that made the construction more environmentally acceptable and benefited the local community by reducing noise and disturbance.”
The Sandford access bridge refurbishment project was delivered using an integrated environmental and engineering approach with the solutions protecting and enhancing the environment. The refurbishment of the 40 metre bridge took place to extend its carrying capacity from 3 to 18 tonnes. Every effort was taken to ensure the preferred solution embraced every opportunity to be sustainable, economic and safe. This project demonstrates Halcrow’s contribution to the Environment Agency’s aim of ‘Creating a better place’.
The award winners were announced on 17 June at the annual industry awards ceremony at Dorney Lake, Windsor.
