Halcrow has won the commercial and business services sector award at the prestigious Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) occupational health and safety awards 2011.
The award was presented to Halcrow’s group safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) director Nigel Valvona at a ceremony in Birmingham on 19 May 2011.
The RoSPA awards look not only at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, recognising important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.
Halcrow’s group safety, health and environment manager Peter Campbell said:
"We are delighted to receive recognition of our employees’ commitment to occupational safety and health. Halcrow’s sector award win reflects the continued hard work of all our employees globally in maintaining excellent standards of occupational safety and health over the year. We look forward to another 12 months where everyone continues to embrace all aspects of health and safety management to the highest possible level."
There were 1800 entrants this year, of which 84 were in Halcrow’s industry sector. The company’s success is as a result of the high quality evidence submitted from employees across all the regions in relation to project delivery, company initiatives and office management.
David Rawlins, RoSPA awards manager, said:
“RoSPA firmly believes that organisations that have demonstrated their commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition. Halcrow has shown that it is committed to striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award.”
Safety charity RoSPA launched its awards programme 55 years ago. In 1993 the society introduced individual sector awards for the most outstanding performance in health and safety within a particular industry or sector. Entrants must demonstrate a consistently excellent and continuously improving performance and ideally provide evidence of a particular initiative or innovative approach which would justify their selection as best in the sector.
