The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts has awarded the Governor General’s Medal in Architecture to the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Telus Centre for Performance and Learning in Toronto – an accolade that recognises outstanding design in recently built projects by Canadian architects.
Halcrow Yolles provided full structural engineering services for this stunning new building which represents a vibrant cultural destination. The new facility is the final phase in the master plan to build a new home for the Conservatory. It is a unique hybrid of teaching / rehearsal facilities and a destination concert venue.
Designed by Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects, the new structure features new academic, administrative and performance spaces, a new rehearsal hall, as well as restoration of its 19th-century heritage building known as Ihnatowycz Hall.
Engineering challenges met during the project included the separation of one of the facility’s four concert halls at the base on isolation pads due to vibrations from the nearby subway.
