Staff at Halcrow’s Swindon office have been working hard to raise money for the Halcrow Foundation’s Haiti appeal. With their love of sweet things in mind, staff came up with a grand plan to start a contest between all the cake-makers to have a bake-off. A small team of hard-workers led by Sheila Hone turned the idea into reality and today 28 fantastic cakes were bought into Burderop Park. A fantastic array of sugary delights were laid out, from a gingerbread house to a classic creamy Victoria sponge.
A team of six judges, led by resources and technical director John Martin, came and scored the cakes out of five on their presentation, texture and taste. After sampling all 28 cakes, the very full judges announced the winners.
Mandy Archer’s coffee and walnut cake was a firm favourite amongst the judges and she was declared the winner, in second place was Sean Matthew’s chocolate behemoth delight and in third place were Sue Burford’s yummy chocolate brownies.
The cakes were then sliced up and sold to Halcrow staff, raising a fantastic £325 for the Haitian appeal.
The Halcrow Foundation’s vision is to bring tangible and sustainable improvements to the lives of people in need by mobilising the goodwill and expertise of Halcrow employees and people associated with the company or the charity.
