The 2010 Halcrow school construction challenge took place this month at St Roch’s Secondary school in Glasgow.
Primary school students from St Stephens, St Mungo’s, St Rochs, and St Teresa’s local schools attended the event which saw the students split into four teams of seven ready to learn about bridge building.
The teams took what they had previously learnt and made model bridges out of newspaper, which was then tested to destruction. Halcrow’s Colin Walker said:
“It was fantastic day, those involved were able to put what they had learnt from the previous lectures and design competitions into practical use to create extremely effective structures. The winning entry which was simply constructed from newspapers was able to carry 25 kgs while spanning a one metre gap!”
The winning team came from St Mungo’s primary school and was made up by Ainsley McHugh, Kaouther Bouneb, Chanel Ferguson, Tobi Ayobami, Ryan Coyne and Grace Dioka.
Regional director Donald Bell said: “We like to play an active role in our local community and support local schools. We have a number of successful working relationships with local schools to enhance their studies and promote excellence as well as raising awareness of our industry”.
