The Mineral Products Association’s (MPA) Annual Health and Safety Awards took place on Wednesday 6 October.

A-one+ won two prestigious awards on the night in front of industry professionals from all over the world. The awards seek to recognise and share knowledge and innovation in the field of health and safety. They were presented by Judith Hackitt, CBE, Chair of the Health and Safety Executive.

A-one, a joint venture between Halcrow and Colas,  has been operating strategic road network services in the north east of England (Area 14) since its inception in 2003. This £115m contract was successfully re-bid in early 2010 by A-one+, a joint venture between Halcrow, Colas and Costain, and will continue for a further five years.

The submission included work on developing the overhead cable marker posts and cone sleeves as well as detailing the recent ‘Look Up Look Out’ awareness campaign highlighting the risks of working near overhead electric power lines. The submission included a short video made by Halcrow's corporate communications team. The judging process also included visiting the Area 12 offices to see the products and educational material first hand.

This resulted in A-one+ receiving Highly Commended in the ‘Bitumen; Asphalt; Contract Surfacing: Promoting Safer Behaviour’ category and winning the ‘Sir Frank Davies Trophy’ for companies with less than 1000 employees.

This national recognition reinforces the company’s commitment in embracing the Highway Agency’s latest health and safety strategy ‘Aiming for Zero’.
