July 2009
The Cross Valley link road and Upton flood attenuation area phases two and three has been shortlisted for the upcoming Estates Gazette Green Awards in the Public Sector Award for Encouraging Sustainable Development category.
This follows the success earlier this year at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) East Midlands Merit Awards where the project brought home the Merit Award for the Large Project category as well as an ‘excellent’ rating for the Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Award scheme (CEEQUAL) whole project award, which evaluates environmental performance from project inception through to construction completion.
Undertaken for the Homes and Communities Agency the scheme will provide a direct 1.45km road link connecting the A45 Weedon Road from the M1 and Daventry to the west and the A45 Upton Way/Danes Camp Way heading to Towcester to the south. Linking residential and commercial land being developed on either side of the River Nene floodplain, the project contributes to the regeneration aspirations of client the Homes and Communities Agency (formerly English Partnerships).
The awards reward excellence in sustainable development and raising environmental awareness, something that is close to Halcrow’s heart.
Halcrow’s project director, Trevor Rackley, praised the multi-disciplinary team for its efforts: “It’s been a great achievement and an excellent learning experience. Our engineers have developed a real understanding of environmental concerns, whilst our environmentalists have come to accept that engineers do want to protect and enhance the environment, not just construct things at any cost.”
Following a public online vote, which opens 27 July, the two entries for the category – Homes and Communities Agency and Imperial College London – will find out if they have won when Estates Gazette announce the winners on 17 October 2009.
If you would like to vote for the project, please go to Estates Gazette’s voting page between 27 July and 18 September.
