September 2009

Congratulations to Toronto team member Rita Wong for winning 2nd place in the recent photo contest sponsored by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE); a competition held annually to showcase the achievements and art of structural engineering.

Rita’s prize-winning shot of Toronto landmark (and Halcrow Yolles project), The Galleria, was chosen by popular public vote from among the 27 finalists who were selected from nearly 1400 submissions.

A striking atrium space in landmark Toronto commercial tower Brookfield Place, The Galleria was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and structural engineers Halcrow Yolles.

The glass-covered walkway, 120m long and six storeys high, resembles two rows of maple trees branching upward to create an arched canopy above. In the winning photo, it is complemented by the art installation Long Wave, a modified sine wave vital in electronic communication. This visual representation identifies an intersection of architectural space and an environment of communication.
