October 2009

Alberta’s first-ever exclusively paediatric palliative care and respite centre officially opened its doors on October 2, 2009 in Calgary to provide a haven for families whose children face progressive or life-threatening illnesses.

Halcrow Yolles provided full structural engineering services for the two-storey, 20,000–square foot Rotary/Flames House, which finished construction in September 2009 and sits next to the new Alberta Children’s Hospital.

GEC Architecture designed the cutting-edge facility to look like a home rather than a clinical medical institution to ensure that children and their families feel as comfortable as possible during their stay. The centre also offers multiple outlets for fun, such as a playground, barbecue area, recreation room and sunroom.

Other key features of the House include a therapeutic activity room, a library, a sensory room and 11 bedrooms, some of which can accommodate entire family units.

Halcrow Yolles is proud to have been involved in this project, which will provide critical support and comfort for patients and their loved ones during a difficult time.
