Halcrow's materials technology and asset engineering experience covers all sectors

Materials are so important to the development of the living standards of mankind that they have given names to the ages of civilisation - Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age.

An understanding of the properties and performance of materials at all stages of their use is essential for the design, construction and maintenance of all construction projects.

Halcrow's materials technology and asset engineering experience covers all sectors, including bridges, roads, buildings, tunnels, coastal structures, waste management, ports, power generation, oil and gas, water and effluent treatment works.

Halcrow currently employs 35 materials technology specialists, able to support construction projects worldwide. Among these specialists are a number of concrete technologists, corrosion engineers, geomaterials engineers and asset engineers.

Our key services include:

  • aggregate resources evaluation and testing
  • audits of concrete construction
  • concrete mix design and optimisation
  • condition surveys of existing structures
  • construction materials in the Middle East
  • durability planning and modelling for structures in aggressive environments
  • early thermal stress analysis of thick section concrete pours and design of measures to minimise the risk of cracking including cooling systems
  • evaluation of bituminous materials
  • expert witness reports for concrete structures and various other structures and construction materials
  • fibre-reinforced plastics for reinforcement of concrete and strengthening existing structures
  • pavement assessment testing
  • repairs and maintenance
  • specification and monitoring of chloride extraction from reinforced concrete
  • audit, design and specification of cathode protection systems for reinforced and pre stressed concrete and steel structures
  • support for The Welding Institute in materials joining technologies
  • asset engineering and asset management services
  • building stone consultancy
  • assessment of historic structures
  • architectural glass technology
