Geohazards - nuclear waste

Dounreay - hydraulic isolation of D1225 shaft

Large quantities of nuclear waste exist now, and it is unavoidable that much more will be generated, not least in the decommissioning of existing nuclear power stations and other nuclear facilities.

The development of safe methods for disposing of this radio-active waste is a vital environmental objective. Furthermore, an economic method of disposal is essential to the viability of potential new nuclear power stations.

Halcrow has considerable experience of advising on and designing radio-active waste disposal facilities. Geotechnical work has included work on operational and post-closure safety cases covering risk assessment and engineering performance studies, design options, materials resources studies, geotechnical interpretation and geomorphological studies.
