Halcrow’s global experience provides comprehensive experience of all requirements for dredging and reclamation schemes

Dredging and reclamation, including beach nourishment, form significant elements of numerous coastal/marine development and coastal protection schemes around the world.

Halcrow has acquired extensive, worldwide experience in geotechnical and geophysical site investigations, surveys, studies, design, specification and supervision for:

  • Coastal and port developments including land reclamation and beaches.
  • Maintenance of port approach and navigation channels, turning basins and berths.
  • Civil works such as immersed tube tunnels, pipelines and outfalls.
  • Minerals extraction.
  • Beach nourishment for the purposes of coastal defence.
  • Amenity beach creation schemes.

The global nature of Halcrow's activities has provided comprehensive experience of the wide variety of dredging methods and types and sizes of dredging equipment. Frequently, the reclamation (or beach nourishment) works are accompanied by structures such as revetments and groynes, to stabilise them once in place. Again, Halcrow’s expertise in these areas is unparalleled.

Halcrow also has experience of the survey equipment and methods used for monitoring and controlling dredging, reclamation and spoil disposal operations as well as for the determination of quantities for payment. We utilise state-of-the art numerical modelling software, both developed in-house and commercially available software, to model the potential impacts of the dredging and reclamation works on the wider marine environment, based on a simulation of the hydrodynamic and sediment regimes in and around dredging and reclamation works.

Our expertise in this field includes:

  • design, specification and supervision of dredging and reclamation works
  • dredging methods and equipment
  • navigation studies and maritime risk assessment
  • numerical hydrodynamic and sediment transport modelling
  • siltation studies
  • environmental impact studies
  • contaminated sediments and spoil disposal studies
  • extraction of sands and gravels
  • reclamation design
  • ground treatment and monitoring instrumentation
  • bunds and revetments
  • beach nourishment
